About QR Codes:
QR Codes were designed in 1994 and were used to categorise parts used in the Japanese Automotive Industry and ensure that items could be easily identified and fitted to vehicles.

More recently QR Codes have become common place in advertising campaigns as they allow smartphone users to scan the code and immediately open a website.  

In June 2011, The Royal Dutch Mint (Koninklijke Nederlandse Munt) issued the world's first coin with a QR code to celebrate the centenary of its current building. When scanned by a smartphone the QR code links to a special website with contents about the historical event and design of the coin.
